On June 24, 2026, The Exigent Group, a portfolio company of private equity firm Huron Capital, announced the acquisition of Superior Building Services, a Columbus, Ohio-based mechanical contractor. The deal expands Exigent’s commercial mechanical services platform in Ohio and marks its eighth acquisition since Huron launched the platform in late 2022 through its ExecFactor® buy-and-build strategy. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Superior Building Services provides boiler, chiller, and HVAC service and retrofit solutions to customers across the greater Columbus region, serving a broad range of institutional and commercial end markets including education, healthcare, government, and food and beverage facilities. President Bill Detillion and Vice President Jason Abbott will continue to lead local operations following the acquisition, providing continuity for customers and employees as the business integrates into Exigent’s broader platform.
For Exigent, the deal adds scale in central Ohio and exposure to the Columbus metropolitan area — a market that has seen significant population growth, commercial development, and public-sector investment in recent years. “We look forward to extending our presence in Ohio,” said Peter van Niekerk, CEO of Exigent, pointing to well-funded school districts, state agencies, and large facility customers driving sustained demand for mechanical services across the region.
The platform: a Huron Capital buy-and-build
Reston, Virginia-based Exigent was launched by Huron Capital in 2022 as an ExecFactor® initiative — Huron’s proprietary approach that pairs executive recruitment with an acquisition-driven growth strategy. The platform provides HVAC, plumbing, engineering, energy-efficiency, and other mechanical system repair, maintenance, and replacement services to complex facility operations across healthcare, education, industrial, government, and other commercial customers.
The strategy centers on mission-critical facility operations: building a regional and ultimately national network of mechanical services providers by acquiring established regional operators and integrating them under a common platform. As it has grown, Exigent has retained each acquired company’s identity and local leadership while layering on shared resources, technical expertise, and the ability to serve larger, multi-site customers.
The operating companies
With Superior, the Exigent group now comprises eight operating companies and roughly 300 union technicians across four regional centers. Each business continues to operate under its own brand while drawing on the platform’s shared engineering, procurement, and back-office capabilities. The group is organized around four regions:
Mid-Atlantic. ACI provides commercial mechanical and plumbing services across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia; JPG Services delivers commercial plumbing and mechanical services across the National Capital region; Global Facility Solutions brings energy and engineering expertise with roughly 30 years of experience; and EASI provides controls, automation, and DDC-based installation services in Maryland and Delaware.
Northeast. ATCO delivers 24/7 mechanical service contracting, preventative maintenance, and repair across Eastern Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Southern Maine.
Southeast. ThermaServe focuses on large commercial, industrial, and institutional cooling systems — including small and large tonnage chillers — across North Florida and Southern Georgia.
Midwest. Smith-Boughan has served the Northwest Ohio area since 1927 with design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance for commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. With the addition of Superior Building Services, the platform extends its Ohio presence into the high-growth Columbus market.
The investment thesis
Huron Capital is a Detroit-based lower middle-market private equity firm founded in 1999. Over more than two decades it has acquired more than 290 companies through seven investment funds and manages over $2 billion in capital, targeting service businesses generating between $20 million and $200 million in revenue across the infrastructure, facility, and residential sectors. The Exigent build-out reflects the firm’s broader focus on consolidating fragmented service industries through targeted acquisitions of established regional operators that provide essential maintenance, repair, and replacement services.
The appeal of commercial mechanical services is the durability of the demand. Institutional and commercial facility owners — school districts, hospitals, government agencies, and large commercial properties — rely on specialized providers to maintain aging infrastructure, improve energy performance, and keep mission-critical systems running. That work is largely non-discretionary and recurring, which makes revenue more resilient across economic cycles than project-driven construction. Adding scale across regions also lets a platform serve multi-site and regional customers that a single local contractor could not.
What it signals for the market
The commercial mechanical and MEP services sector is consolidating along lines now familiar across facility services: private equity sponsors assembling regional operators with recurring institutional customer bases into larger, multi-region platforms. Exigent’s pace — eight acquisitions in under four years — reflects how active that buildout has become.
For owners of commercial mechanical contractors, particularly union shops with strong institutional customer relationships, the platform model offers a path to scale, shared engineering and procurement resources, and broader geographic reach while keeping local brand and leadership in place. As with any partnership, the decisive questions for a seller are less about whether a buyer will preserve the name and more about the substance of integration and cultural fit — how a platform actually supports a business after closing, and whether its resources genuinely advance the work. Those are the questions worth pressure-testing before signing anything.
